The Music Of The Irish

Irish music is a rich dichotomy. Traditional and modern. North and south. It reflects the passion of a beautiful people with a rich tradition and culture. Even today, the distinct sound of Ireland’s music is immediately recognizable. More than that, it has actually influenced such genres as country, roots, and modern rock. Because of its uniqueness and its adaptability, it is no wonder that Irish music has enjoyed great success around the world in recent times. Some very notable artists include Sinead O’Connor, The Corrs, Enya, Riverdance, Boyzone, Westlife, and the great U2.

In the late 90s, a group called Exile Eye sparked great interest in Irish hip hop and opened doors for other groups to follow. However, they were by no means, the first hip hop group in Ireland. Other crews such as Scary Eire, Homebrew and Third Eye Surfers blazed that particular trail. In the 2000s, the trend was instrumental bands with a traditional slant. Notable groups include Beoga and Teada.

Now there are new bands promoting ballads that are so familiar to pub goers. These include Flogging Molly and the Gaelic Storm. Other bands like Skelpin, Flook, and Kila focus on fusion music. Some of these types of band are not even located in Ireland itself. That is perhaps, the best tribute to Irish music. That it can reach out and appeal to people across genres and geographical divisions. It is a wonderful art that can touch such a diverse audience. But isn’t that what music is all about anyway?
