How To Choose The Right Acoustic Guitar

Deciding that you’re going to learn how to play music is always daunting. For those not sure which direction to head in, the acoustic guitar is a great option to consider. Although the piano is another good beginner’s instrument, it is not nearly as portable and much more expensive. The acoustic, as well, is more common in modern day rock and pop songs and works best for budding songwriters.

If you’re itching to get your hands on one then look no further than your local music shop. Every store is guaranteed to have a wide variety of acoustics for you. Some can be very cheap and others quite pricey. Although it’s tempting to pay nothing for an acoustic, you don’t want to go too low or you will end up with an instrument that is too difficult to play and impossible to learn on.

There aren’t just differences in price and quality, but there are also several types of acoustics to choose from. The standard choice is usually the dreadnought acoustic guitar. Although models like the twelve string and classical guitars are popular, they are specific to certain genres. The dreadnought is more versatile.

A great, inexpensive dreadnought is the Alvarez acoustic guitar. These are a quality instruments and many are priced in the $100-200 range. This is ideal for someone just starting out and hesitant to spend a lot of money.

Even more popular is the Takamine acoustic guitar. These are slightly higher in price ($200-300), but the quality is quite good. These guitars tend to last a long time, so many beginners end up keeping them even when they’ve started to get more serious.

Some people like to start with a nice acoustic. For those people, the Martin company is always a great choice. Although the cheapest Martins usually start off around $500, the quality is unbeatable. They are all handmade in the United States and the care to detail makes them very simple to play. Enough for anyone to gain confidence in a flash.

Another popular high end brand is the Taylor acoustic. While these offer the same quality and affordability as the Martin, they do have one model that is fairly unique. This is the ‘Baby Taylor, ‘ which is a 3/4 sized guitar. Although it’s smaller than average, it’s still quite easy to play and it is incredibly portable. This allows the student to practice whenever they want.

So, when you’re considering purchasing your first acoustic, try a dreadnought. Companies like Martin, Taylor, Takamine and Alavarez offer nice instruments at reasonable prices. Simply head down to your local shop and make your choice.
